It\u2019s all many of us have heard or thought about. While a vaccine is on the way, it will be some time before everyone who wants one can get one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means that throughout the holiday season and winter, many people are going to be self-isolating or spending less time with other people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people feel significant fear about the potential of contracting COVID-19, and the thought that you could have been exposed to it can be anxiety-producing. You do need to take certain steps after COVID-19 exposure to keep yourself and others safe, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following are some things to know about COVID and possible exposure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the Incubation Period?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An incubation period is the amount of time from when you are exposed to a virus to when you first develop signs or symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegomezfirm.com\/incubation-period-coronavirus-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incubation period for COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the CDC, is anywhere from two to 14 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means it may take anywhere from two to 14 days to see symptoms after exposure. From what we know right now, the average incubation period is around five days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 98% of all people infected with COVID-19 will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/coronavirus\/local-exposure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop symptoms within 11.5 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incubation period for the standard flu is anywhere from one to four days. The longer potential incubation period of COVID is one of the many things that makes it different from the flu and more challenging to deal with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a longer incubation period, you may not know you were infected for several days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Does COVID-19 Spread?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 is believed to spread primarily from person-to-person. Close contact is the key driver of spread. Close contact means being within around six feet for a total of 15 minutes or more in a 24-hour period. You might be infected by someone\u2019s respiratory droplets coming from their nose or mouth when they sneeze, cough, speak, or sing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also a concept called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-how-is-it-transmitted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">airborne transmission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be aware of.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airborne transmission means that when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/coronavirus\/expert-answers\/can-coronavirus-spread-food-water\/faq-20485479\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someone infected with COVID releases droplets and particles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they can linger in the air for some time. That could mean you\u2019re potentially infected even if you aren\u2019t within six feet of an infected person. This spreading mechanism is not thought to be that common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Should You Quarantine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quarantine is something the CDC says you should do if you may have been exposed to COVID. The goal is to stay away from others and to prevent the spread of the illness even if you don\u2019t yet know if you\u2019re sick. If you\u2019re in quarantine, you should stay home and away from other people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quarantine is different from isolation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in isolation, you are infected with the virus, and you know it. If you\u2019re in quarantine, you think you\u2019ve been exposed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What If You Have to Take Off Work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re quarantining because you are sick with coronavirus or because you\u2019ve been exposed to someone who is, you may have to take time off work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/resourcesandtools\/tools-and-samples\/policies\/pages\/fmla-leave-expansion-and-emergency-paid-sick-leave-policy-coronavirus.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires some employers to give paid sick leave or expanded family and medical leave for reasons related to COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><div class=\"hrpqz663b3b926ef03\" ><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-ef+6k-30-ac+ty\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8644023145432093\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"9984784199\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/div><style type=\"text\/css\">\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 1201px) {\r\n.hrpqz663b3b926ef03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 993px) and (max-width: 1200px) {\r\n.hrpqz663b3b926ef03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 769px) and (max-width: 992px) {\r\n.hrpqz663b3b926ef03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 768px) {\r\n.hrpqz663b3b926ef03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n@media screen and (max-width: 767px) {\r\n.hrpqz663b3b926ef03 {\r\ndisplay: block;\r\n}\r\n}\r\n<\/style>\r\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, under this legislation, covered employers have to provide up to 80 hours of paid sick leave at your regular pay rate if you can\u2019t work because you\u2019re quarantined. The quarantine has to be based on Federal, state, or local government orders or the advice of a health care provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legislation also made available up to 10 additional weeks of paid expanded family and medical leave, at two-thirds of your regular rate of pay. To be eligible, you have to work for a covered employer. You also have to have been employed for at least 30 calendar days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protections apply to public and private employers with fewer than 500 employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees may qualify for some exemptions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with being quarantined or sick yourself, you may have additional coverage if you are caring for a child whose school is closed or you\u2019re experiencing a similar situation related to COVID-19 that\u2019s keeping you from working.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take FMLA leave, as is always the case, you\u2019re able to return to your same position or an equivalent position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community Spread<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/if-you-are-sick\/quarantine.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concept of community spread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is important to understand with COVID. Community spread means that people in an area have been infected with a virus, and they may not all know where they got it from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In areas with high rates of community spread, contact tracing becomes very difficult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if Someone In Your Household Is Infected?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea of someone in your own house getting sick can be stressful and overwhelming. However, it may happen, and most people coronavirus do recover at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a caregiver or live with someone infected, you should stay home as well except to get medical care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can, have the sick person use a different room and bathroom than everyone else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be careful about washing your hands and when soap and water aren\u2019t available, using an alcohol-based sanitizer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person in your home who is sick should wear a disposable face mask.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid unnecessary contact with the person who has COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for any warning signs the person may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/coronavirus-resource-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require emergency medical care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as pain or pressure in the chest, confusion, inability to stay awake, trouble breathing, or bluish face or lips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may receive a phone call from your local health department if you are sick or you\u2019ve been exposed to someone who is. This is part of contact tracing, and it is best to take the call if you can. This can help reduce community spread where you live and it may help protect other people.
